Airport to be expanded

Norway’s main gateway airport, Oslo Lufthavn Gardermoen, opened just 12 years ago, but plans are already underway for expansion.

Gardermoen’s board voted this week to recommend construction of a new terminal to civil aviation authority Avinor. Norway’s Transport Ministry (Samferdselsdepartementet) will have the final say for a project that may cost as much as NOK 8 billion (USD 133 million).

Airport officials estimate that annual passenger traffic through Gardermoen will grow from around 20 million today to 28 million by 2013 and 35 million by 2025. The expansion program is thus planned in two phases.

The current airport was meant to serve 17 million but that volume was realized just 10 years after the airport opened in 1998.
