Norwegian held in grisly murder in Thailand

A 49-year-old Norwegian man has been arrested in Thailand on suspicion of murdering his former girlfriend who disappeared three years ago. He reportedly has admitted that he was “involved” in her death and that he hid her corpse in garbage bags.

Rungnapa Rachsombat was reported missing in July 2009, two months after her 10-year relationship with the arrested Norwegian ended. Newspaper Aftenposten reported that he’s originally from “central Østlandet” in Norway but has lived in Thailand for many years.

Police in Phuket raided his home and arrested him on Tuesday, initially on charges of illegal weapons possession. He was then linked to the woman’s disappearance after police found remains of human bones in a plastic bag in one of the home’s bathrooms, according to the Phuket News. Police also found items that belonged to the woman, including her purse with her driver’s license and credit cards, and a pistol with bullets.

A spokeswoman for the Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok said they were working to provide information sought by the Thai police. The man was jailed in Phuket.
