Relay race set new record

Nearly 40,000 people took part in this year’s Holmenkollstafetten, an annual relay race in Oslo that’s been run since 1923. With 2,727 teams at the starting line, organizers could claim a new record for participation.

The race covers 18.4 kilometers over 15 laps from the center of Oslo up the hills towards the Holmenkollen Ski Jump and back down again to the city. Many of the teams are formed by companies, with work colleagues running the various laps.

There were also more than a few local celebrities taking part, including skiing stars Marit Bjørgen, Therese Johaug and Odd-Bjørn Hjelmeset. Other participants came from all over the country, even from Bardufoss in the far north. The Tjalve sports club, which hosts the race, won the elite class this year for men.
