A man in his mid-20s was in police custody on Monday in connection with an assault on a police officer during the weekend that has shocked the most jaded of his colleagues. Police were looking for two more possible accomplices.
The assault occurred late Saturday night outside a nightclub on Hegdehaugsveien, an area just northwest of downtown that’s mostly known as a residential district but where neighbours often have complained of noise from local bars and restaurants.
A plain-clothed officer responding to calls of public disturbance was reportedly attacked from behind after he and a female colleague had arrested a person outside the bar Trafalgar. The police officer was knocked to the ground, whereupon his assailants kicked him repeatedly in the head.
The officer, in his 30s, sustained serious injuries including several facial fractures. Hospital officials described his condition as “stable” on Monday, according to Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK).
