Diplomacy mixed with sticky rice

PHOTO FEATURE: Thousands of Thai food fans turned out for a festival at the central square called Youngstorget in Oslo on Saturday, and it was nearly as warm as in Bangkok. Sultry weather mixed with satay as the scents and sounds of Thailand filled a Norwegian early summer afternoon.

Thai Food FestivalThe multi-cultural festival also featured Thai handcrafts and traditional and contemporary Thai dances and music, while Thai food and drink stands rimmed the square and did brisk business.

Thai festivalThe event was organized and sponsored by The Royal Thai Embassy in Oslo, Thai Airways and tourism organizations in Thailand, which has become a popular holiday destination for Norwegians in recent years.

Thai ambassador Theerakun NiyomAmong those in the crowd was Thailand’s ambassador to Norway, Theerakun Niyom, in unusually informal attire. Many of those visiting his stand were greeted with an orchid corsage, before they headed off for more spring rolls and iced coffee.
