Jail term for fatal hit and run driving

The driver charged with accidentally killing Jeff Mwangi Kwirikia in a hit and run accident, was sentenced to 120 days in jail on Tuesday.

A local court in Øvre Romerike also ruled that the 40 year old man will never drive a car again. The court further ordered the man to pay NOK 125.000 to each of the victim’s eight closest family members.

Jeff Mwangi, a native of Kenya, was the father of singer Stella Mwangi who represented Norway in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest. During the memorial, Mwangi was hailed for integrating his children into Norwegian society while never letting them forget where they came from.

The court heard that before the accident in January 2012, the man had driven for at least 16 seconds without paying sufficient attention.

The 40-years old man’s lawyer, Jørund Lægland, told Romerikes Blad (external link with photos) that his client thinks the sentence is harsh and considers appealing it.

The victim’s elderly parents live in Kenya with no social security, their only support coming from their son in Norway.
