Driver killed in rockslide

A motorist was killed when a large rockslide hit the main E6 highway at Sel in the valley of Gudbrandsdalen on  Friday.

The slide was 30 meters wide, covering the entire road which remained closed in both directions for several hours. Police said the driver was alone in his car and died at the scene.

A spokesman for the Oppland county road authority said they had no prior knowledge of rockslide danger at this particular spot, and admitted to Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) that the slide came as a surprise.

The authority was sending two geologists to examine the area where the slide occurred, the spokesman said.
