An Afghan refugee suspected of murdering the 17-year-old Afghan mother of their child in Grua, Oppland County, in June was due to undergo police questioning on Tuesday following his return to Norway on Monday. He’d been arrested in Italy, where he fled with the couple’s two-year-old girl.
Norwegian police had to wait nearly two months for his extradition following his arrest in Rome in mid-June. His arrest had in turn followed a dramatic manhunt through Europe, after the suspect traveled by train and bus for several days after the murder. The little girl’s mother had been found stabbed to death in a house in Grua, where she was visiting relatives while waiting for her asylum application for herself and her daughter to be processed.
The circumstances leading up to her murder remained unclear, and Norwegian authorities had no record of the suspect seeking asylum himself in Norway. The fate of their daughter also remained unclear, but news bureau NTB reported she was still in Italy in the care of child welfare authorities.
