Wounded moose went on attack

Hunters who shot but didn’t manage to kill a fully grown moose ox ended up setting off a dramatic chain of events over the weekend that ended with a member of their hunting team being flown to a hospital in Lillehammer.

The wounded moose, clearly in pain and angry, reacted by going on the attack when the hunting team member who was leading the hunters’ dogs tracked him down. Her intent was to put the huge animal out of its misery but local newspaper Østlendingen reported that the moose charged her instead, literally lifted her up with his horns and tossed her around.

One witness in her hunting team told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) it was the “worst” he’d ever experienced after several years of taking part in the annual moose hunt. The woman eventually landed on the ground and the moose was shot again and killed by another team member.

Hunting team leader Erling Søgård said the woman was taken by ambulance to an emergency clinic in nearby Dombås but later airlifted to the regional hospital in Lillehammer, where she was being treated for broken ribs and liver injuries.
