A 50-year-old father of six went on trial in Oslo this week, accused of engaging in serious domestic violence against his wife, two daughters and four sons. He faces six years in prison.
Newspaper Dagsavisen reported over the weekend that the man carried out the violence over a period of many years, beginning when his eldest daughter was only three years old. He beat her, threatened to cut out her tongue and subject her to electric shocks. She was not allowed to attend other children’s birthday parties or school events, and he locked her in her room for days at a time.
Prosecutors say his other daughter was often threatened with death, bound to a bed and whipped with a belt on the soles of her feet. His sons didn’t escape the violence and his wife was also beaten and threatened. He also controlled her movements, her contacts and the use of her telephone and bank account.
The 50-year-old denies guilt, according to his defense attorney. The trial follows a rash of reports on domestic violence in Norway and the deaths of several child abuse victims.
