Ratings high for little girl’s big voice

More than a million Norwegians plunked themselves down in front of their televisions over the weekend to watch eight-year-old Angelina Jordan Astar win the talent show Norske Talenter (Norway’s Got Talent) on TV2. Her voice has been compared to that of Billie Holiday’s, and her singing left some judges in tears.

Ratings released Monday show that 1,033,00 watched the singer now known simply as “Angelina” on Norske Talenter Friday evening, and TV2 told news bureau NTB it was very pleased with the results. The talent show final attracted an average of 733,000 viewers over the course of the show, up from 545,000 last year and 562,000 in 2013.

“It’s fantastic to see that more than a million viewers watched Angelina win,” said TV2’s communications chief Jan-Petter Dahl. “A star is born.”

Angelina sang Ella Fitzgerald’s jazz version of the Gershwin classic Summertime, on a stage decorated like a rose garden (see the video here – external link). She’s the youngest winner of the talent show so far, and pocketed a prize of NOK 500,000 (USD 83,000). The third-grader has already been a hit on YouTube, for her videos of other old classics like Billie Holiday’s Gloomy Sunday and Frank Sinatra’s Fly Me to the Moon.
