School’s out, crowds and mass exodus expected

Airport officials were warning passengers in Norway to allow plenty of time to catch flights on Friday and through the weekend. The end of the school year means thousands of Norwegians were immediately heading off on summer vacations.

“We can expect long lines at Norwegian airports when thousands of schools start summer holidays,” Aslak Sverdrup, director of the Flesland airport serving Bergen. “For us, it’s the busiest day of the year.”

Oslo’s main airport at Gardermoen was also braced for big crowds, with at least 10,000 more passengers than normal flying out on this particular Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, in downtown Oslo itself, tens of thousands of newly free school students and youth were expected to descend on the City Hall Plaza for the annual VG Lista concert featuring Norwegian pop music artists. Some young fans arrived as early as 4am, to get a good spot up front for the free outdoor concert.

Organizers, however, were urging parents against sending their children to the huge concert alone. “We’re expecting a young audience, and as many as 70,000 to 100,000 may turn up. Then there can also be situations where children need some adults around.” Among those performing this year is teen idol Isac Elliot.
