Norway grants education funding to Malawi

Prime Minister Erna Solberg, who’s been traveling with Foreign Minister Børge Brende in South Africa and Malawi this week, signed an agreement with officials from the UN and Malawi on Wednesday to fund schooling in Malawi. The country is among the world’s poorest, where only 35 percent of all girls and 41 percent of boys complete the eighth grade.

“Norway will contribute NOK 100 million a year to strengthen the educational sector in the country,” Solberg said. She’s recently been on a campaign to promote education for girls around the world, especially in countries where they’re victims of discrimination and religious traditions.

The funds from Norway will help provide better access to school for girls in Malawi. They’ll receive meals at school and health care, while the program will also contribute to continuing education for teachers, and for classes in sex education and human rights.

Solberg also met with a group of boys and girls who will travel to Norway to take part in the annual Norway Cup football tournament. After beginning her trip in South Africa, Solberg was traveling on to Rwanda Wednesday evening, where she was to meet with President Paul Kagame for political discussions.
