Norwegians win championship relay

Norway’s top women skiers redeemed themselves after crushing losses on Tuesday and won the women’s relay at the Nordic World Ski Championships on Thursday. Their victory was aided by a rival Swedish skier’s fall.

“What a nightmare for (Maria) Rydqvist (of Sweden),” claimed commentator Jann Post on state broadcaster NRK as the race was carried live on both Norwegian radio and TV. Rydqvist was skiing right behind Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen of Norway, who suddenly sprang to the lead.

Norway’s four-woman relay team included Jacobsen, Therese Johaug, Heidi Weng and Marit Bjørgen, who could add yet another gold medal to her record career total.

Rydqvist recovered quickly and Sweden ended up winning the silver medal, while Finland’s team placed third and won the bronze. The women skiers will be back in action on Saturday for the grueling 30-kilometer race, the last event for them at the world championships in Falun, Sweden.
