Krekar held for another seven weeks

A court in Oslo has ordered that Islamic cleric Mullah Krekar, who’s been deemed a threat to national security, be held in prison for another seven weeks, until his trial comes up regarding the latest charges against him.

Krekar already has been imprisoned for making threats and now faces similar charges that prosecutors feel confident will result in another prison term. Unlike Krekar’s longtime defense attorney, Brynjar Meling, prosecutors don’t worry that Krekar may overserve his time. His last sentence was for two years and 10 months.

The 59-year-old Krekar, who initially came to Norway as a refugee from Northern Iraq, has been repeatedly charged with supporting terrorist acts and making threats, at one point against now-Prime Minister Erna Solberg. Krekar claims the cases against him are “political” in nature.
