Fire broke out at the historic Hotel Bristol in Oslo on Sunday afternoon, forcing the evacuation of 166 guests and 44 employees. There were no injuries, however, and the fire was quickly contained.
Oslo’s fire brigade mounted a major response to the alarm, which was sounded automatically from smoke generated by paper that started smoldering in a garbage room. Lars Grimsgård of the Oslo fire and rescue department told newspaper Dagsavisen that there were “no open flames” but the fire generated potentially hazardous amounts of smoke.
Damage was minimal and guests were allowed to return to their rooms around 5:30pm. “Everyone was accounted for and there were no injuries,” Grimsgård said.
