Fears that Norwegians would simply stay home and watch films on video players, DVDs or via online services have proved unfounded. Local cinemas sold some 4.2 million tickets just during the first four months of this year, in a country of just over 5 million people.
The sales are contributing to another strong year, the best since 2006, reported Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) this week. Sales have been boosted by some blockbuster films, with fully 14 seen in cinemas by more than 100,000 people. The superhero film Deadpool topped the charts after selling 311,544 tickets.
Next in line was the Norwegian historic drama Birkebeinerne, which was seen by 266,901, followed by The Revenant and the children’s film Alvin og gjengen.
