Solberg joins wolf hunt

Prime Minister Erna Solberg headed up to Hadeland, north of Oslo, on Thursday to express support for those trying to hunt down a wolf suspected of attacking more than 110 sheep during the past week. Lambs face more threats much farther north in Nordland, after crows and ravens attacked them and hacked out their eyes.

“It was completely grotesque,” sheep rancher John Arne Ludvigsen told NRK Nordland after finding 15 of his 70 lambs killed and partially eaten on his farm in the otherwise scenic Vega Islands off the coast of Nordland. Ludvigsen has witnessed the attacks himself and likened the birds to “Spitfires,” diving down on his flock. Calls were already going out for a bird hunt, which can start from July 15.

Solberg wasn’t expected to have such a direct encounter with brutality Thursday evening, but she had already been saddened by news of the wolf attacks on sheep. Her government has been under criticism for not supporting more wolf hunts. She denied she made the trip to Hadeland because it’s an election year.

The hunt for what’s believed to just one wolf that has roamed through Hurdal, Gran and Toten was expanded on Wednesday to include parts of Søndre Land and Gjøvik. More mauled sheep were found in Brandbu on Tuesday.
