This year’s Nobel prizes will all be worth more for their recipients, who started being named on Monday. Three Americans shared the Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology, which like the other prizes now amounts to SEK 9 million.
That’s up from SEK 8 million last year but still down from the SEK 10 million awarded until 2011. That’s when concerns over the economic situation for the Nobel foundation forced some cost-cutting. The goal is for the monetary award connected to the prize to follow trends in society at large.
The first prize-winners were announced in Stockholm on Monday, with Americans Jeffrey C Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W Young winning the prize for their discovery of molecular mechanisms that control the circadian ryhthm, or internal biological clock. Their research explains how plants, animals and humans adapt their biological rythm so that it is synchronized with the earth’s revolutions.
The Nobel prizes in physics and chemistry will be announced on Tuesday and Wednesday with the Nobel Peace Prize to be announced in Oslo on Friday. The Nobel Prizes in economics and literature are expected early next week.
