Norway exports record amounts of gas

Never before has Norway exported so much gas as it did during the last 12 months ending in October. Norway’s Statoil also emerged as one of the largest exporters of gas to the EU.

Newspaper Aftenposten reported that demand for gas increased in Europe by 20 billion standard cubic meters from October 2016 to October 2017. Norway and Russland covered most of the demand and that led to a new export record for Norway.

Statoil had more gas to sell because Norwegian authorities had given permission to extract more gas from Norway’s Troll field. Production rose from 30 to 36 billion cubic meters, Tor Martin Arnfinn of Statoil told Aftenposten.

Arnfinn said demand for gas imports rose in the EU because European suppliers are producing less gas, esepcially in the Netherlands. All the gas now coming out of the US, meanwhile, is largely being exported to Asia and Latin America.
