Skiers and jumpers had a big week

Norwegian skier Heidi Weng won her second Tour de Ski in a row on Sunday, after a tough week of races that left two other Norwegians placing second in both the men’s and women’s competition. Now Weng just needs to concentrate on staying healthy for races in the upcoming Winter Olympics.

Ingvild Flugstad Østberg had lead Tour de Ski earlier last week but ended second just ahead of Jessica Diggins of the US. Martin Johnsrud Sundby finished second in the men’s Tour de Ski behind Dario Colgna of Switzerland but ahead of Alex Harvey of Canada.

Several of Norway’s top skiers, including Johannes Høsflot Klæbo and Marit Bjørgen, didn’t race in Tour de Ski, to save their endurance for the Olympics. Petter Northug wasn’t allowed to race in Tour de Ski after coaches for the Norwegian ski team felt he didn’t qualify. He ended up doing poorly in the Scandinavian Cup in Piteå, finishing a lowly 48th in the 30-kilometer (18-mile) event. That failed to impress his Norwegian teammates, who don’t think Northug will qualify for next month’s Winter Olympics in South Korea.

Norway’s ski jumpers were also in action all last week at the annual “Hoppuka” competition in the alps. Like the skiers, they had to defy some bad and wet weather but Norway’s Daniel Andre Tande won second place in Innsbruck on Sunday after several days of competition that moved from venue to venue.
