65 tunnels to close at night

Highway officials were warning of traffic disruptions in Western Norway when around 65 tunnels will be closed at night over the next several years for required upgrades. Several are on some of the most heavily trafficked roads around Bergen, including the E16 and E39 highways.

“This will cause some great challenges for motorists,” Helge Eidsnes, regional road chief, told state broadcaster NRK. “There’s still a lot of traffic at night, especially on the E16. There will also be emergency vehicles that need to get through.”

Lighting, ventilation and electrical systems need to be replaced, more turnouts for vehicles with problems need to be excavated and safety systems in the event of fire must be improved.

The biggest challenge will involve the Fløyfjells Tunnel in Bergen that will need to close in 2022. All the work is due to be completed by 2025.
