New ‘bloodbath’ on the Nordland train line

State railroad Bane Nor has been under pressure to build fences along the tracks of the country’s northernmost train line, Nordlandsbanen, after a series of collisions with reindeer. Now comes news that they’re not the only animals to fall victim to the trains this winter.

Newspaper Rana No reported this week that 148 moose have also been run over by trains on the Nordland line just since January 1. “It’s a bloodbath,” Geir Snefjellå of the municipality of Rana told Rana No.

“Politicians talk about the reindeer, but say little if anything about all the moose being killed,” John Gunnar Halse, leader of forest and wildlife management in Rana, told Rana No. Halse suspects that’s because no one owns the moose, while the reindeer have been part of commercial herds.
