Tourist killed after falling on Lofoten

A man who was out hiking with a group of nine French tourists was killed Thursday when he fell 30 meters in Moskenes on the Lofoten islands. The group was hiking from Munkebu, a tourist cabin under the mountain called Munken.

State broadcaster NRK reported that the area is remote with poor mobile phone coverage. The group managed to report the accident and a Sea King helicopter was flown in to carry the man’s body to the closest hospital, Nordlandssykehuset in Gravdal. He was declared dead by rescue personnel when they arrived at the scene.

Neither the victim’s nationality nor age were immediately confirmed. Mayor Lillian Rasmussen told NRK that a crisis team was being assembled and that “two good mountaineers” had been sent up to meet the group of tourists on their way down.
