Anders Jacobsen wins major ski jumping event

Norwegian ski jumper Anders Jacobsen soared to a brilliant comeback in his sport on New Year’s Day when he won the second of four German-Austrian World Cup events in the week-long Four Hills Tournament, known as Hoppuka (Jumping Week) in Norwegian.

Jacobsen won Thursday’s event at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany, where he also won two years ago. Since then he’s battled injury and such a downturn in his ski jumping performance that he barely made the seven-member team from Norway. At the first event in the week of ski jumping competition at Oberstdorf, Jacobsen placed 14th.

“I hadn’t believed this would be possible two days ago,” Jacobsen told NRK. He admitted to getting tears in his eyes when he suddenly landed on the winners’ platform Thursday and could listen to the Norwegian national anthem being played. The victory propelled him into fourth place overall with 540.7 points, behind Stefan Kraft of Austria, Peter Prevc of Slovenia and Michael Hayböck of Austria.

“A comeback like this after being injured means a lot,” he said. “Now I have finally proven to myself that this is possible. I haven’t been certain before, despite some good jumps in training.”

The only other Norwegian in the Top 10 so far includes Rune Velta in 9th place. Anders Fannemel was 11th, while Phillip Sjøen was 16th, Anders Bardal 19th, Johann Andre Forfang 23rd and Daniel Andre Tande 46th. Now the action moves on to Innsbruck, ending at Bischofshofen on Tuesday.
