Handball team loses at world championships

Spain was too strong for Norway on Friday, knocking the Norwegian women’s handball team out of the final battle for the world handball championship in Japan. That shattered the Norwegians’ dream of championship gold, and automatic qualification for the Olympics.

The latter dream remains alive but the Norwegians were totally upset by their 22-28 loss against the Spaniards. “Norway was played straight out of the hall,” concluded Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK)’s handball commentator Kenneth Gabrielsen.

The Norwegians were favoured in the semi-final action, and Norway has beaten Spain on several occasions. This time it was different, reported NRK, when it was Spain that advanced to their first championship finals ever, to play against the Netherlands. Norway was reduced to playing against Russia for the bronze medal.

“Now we’ll just pull together, put our heads together and just take that medal,” player Marta Tomac told NRK. “We have to show that we’re better than we were today.”
