Syrian charged with terror financing

A 31-year-old Syrian citizen remained in police custody in Norway this week, charged with financing terrorism in his homeland. He was ordered jailed for at least four weeks, while police continue their investigation.

The suspect, arrested at his home in southeastern Norway, denies the charges against him, according to his defense attorney Harald Otterstad. When police raided his home, they found NOK 390,000 in cash (around USD 41,000) in his mattress, according to newssite Nettavisen.

“We have investigated this case about terror financing for some time now,” Martin Bernsen of Norway’s police intelligence service PST (Politiets sikkerhetstjeneste) told news bureau NTB. “He’s involved in the case.” PST asked the court that he be jailed to prevent any tampering with evidence.
