Things weren’t looking good at all for Jonas Lovy, Norway’s entry at the annual Eurovision Song Contest, after he literally lost his voice during a gig in London last month. After some emergency therapy in Oslo and almost total isolation, Lovy made it into the Eurovision finals in Vienna Saturday night and ended up 14th.
“It’s always fun to beat the odds,” Lovy told reporters, after he’d performed his song “Ya Ya Ya,” billed as “powerful rock song” by news bureau NTB. Lovy had earlier told NTB that his vocal chords were intact, but he’d suffered from a strained muscle in his throat.
Bulgaria won Eurovision while Lovy was pleased with 14th place. The 31-year-old father of a three-year-old boy who lives in Bergen (known for rainy weather) faces lots of virus risk. “For me, this was a respectable placement,” Lovy said. “I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished.”
