Police warn of thieves and swindlers

As thousands descend on Oslo for the opening of the Nordic World Ski Championships (Ski-VM 2011) this week, police are issuing warnings that professional pickpockets and credit card swindlers will be arriving in the capital as well.

“We know from experience that these types of large events attract criminals,” Johan Fredriksen of the Oslo Police District told news bureau NTB. Pickpockets can be expected amidst the crowds, Fredriksen said, especially on public transport.

He advised spectators not to carry valuables, only what’s most needed, and to keep a close eye on their wallets.

Police will be on patrol along with private security guards hired in by Ski-VM organizers. Another 80 volunteers from the national police academy will also be on hand to help the public.
