Population tops 5.5 million

Norway started the year with an official population of 5,550,203. That amounts to a slight rise from the same time last year but many areas in the far north would have seen population declines if it hadn’t been for immigration.

State statistics bureau SSB (Statistics Norway) reported a population increase this week of 61,219. That was a slight decline from the population growth reported in early 2023, but that was also fueled by record numbers of refugees arriving from Ukraine.

SSB reported 51,980 births during the past year, offsetting deaths of 43,803 and thus providing a “birth surplus” of 8,177 as of January 1. Total immigration, meanwhile, amounted to 86,589 but 34,011 also emigrated from Norway. The difference, combined with the birth surplus, accounted for the overall population growth of 61,219.
