Award-winning novel becomes TV series

The award-winning novel Halvbroren (The Half Brother), by Norwegian author Lars Saabye Christensen, is set to become an eight-part television series on Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK).

A star-studded cast of characters, including Danish actress Ghita Nørby, were assembling for the first time this week “to get to know each other,” since they’ll all be part of the same literary and television family.

“This is incredibly fun,” actor Nicolai Cleve Broch, who will play the character Barnum in the book, told news bureau NTB. “It was Lars Saabye Christensen who taught me to read books.” Broch claimed he felt a sense of “childlike joy” that he was “being allowed to play in Christensen’s universe.”

Christensen’s lengthy novel Halvbroren won a long list of prizes after it was published in 2001, including the Nordic Council’s Literature Prize. It was a best-seller, chronicling the saga of a family through several generations in Oslo.

The producers of the TV series said they spent a year just finding the right faces to go with the characters in Christensen’s epic work. The series is due to be ready for airing on NRK next year.
