A blaze that swept through a barn in Rypdal, just south of Vestnes in the county of Møre og Romsdal, left around 900 pigs dead over the weekend. An estimated 95 piglets were rescued.
Emergency crews said around 700 to 800 pigs were killed in the fire and another hundred had to be destroyed. Another half dozen that escaped also had to be killed because of burns or smoke inhalation, according to operations leader Arnfinn Valderhaug of the Sunnmøre Police District.
News bureau NTB reported that the first alarms came in around 2:30am on Sunday. The barn was already engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
They battled the blaze in an effort to prevent it from spreading to other buildings on the farm, including a residence. The cause of the fire was undetermined.
