Foreign Ministry officials registered 1,266 deaths of Norwegians abroad last year, more than double the number in 2012, reported newspaper VG last week. The numbers were assembled by Norway’s embassies and consulates around the world.
The largest number of deaths occurred in Sweden, followed by Spain, Thailand and the US. Spain and to some degree Sweden are countries where many Norwegians have gone to live after retirement.
The number of deaths reported in 2012 was 540. Ministry officials had no clear reason for the increase, but speculated that it reflects increased mobility among Norwegians.
