Curling team settles for silver

Norway’s men’s curling team, which has won Olympic gold and dominated the sport internationally for years, had to settle for silver in the European Championships over the weekend. Norway lost the final match to Sweden, by a score of 4-5.

The match went into overtime, at which point the Swedes secured the necessary extra point to claim victory. Not even the Norwegians’ trademark fancy trousers, which featured the Norwegian flag at the semi-final in Switzerland on Friday, could save the popular men from Fornebu this time.

The Norwegians had played what commentators called a “cynical” semi-final against Italy, which brought them into the finals once again. Curling star Thomas Ulsrud has led his team to two European Championships, in 2010 and 2011 and his team now has four European Championship silvers as well.
