US President Joe Biden has nominated a wealthy and faithful financial supporter of his Democratic Party, Marc Nathanson, to be the next US ambassador to Norway. Nathanson is a 76-year-old billionaire who built his fortune through cable TV, initially in California.
The US Embassy in Oslo has been without an ambassador since Kenneth Braithwaite was called back to the US by former President Donald Trump in late 2019 to serve as Secretary of the Navy.
US ambassadors to Norway are rarely career diplomats but rather are offered the post by presidents grateful for their financial support during election campaigns. Nathanson is no exception, having been an active contributor to the party, to Biden himself and to a long list of liberal causes. His nomination is subject to confirmation by the US Senate.
