Wednesday’s Nobel Peace Prize ceremony attracted the presidents of Argentina, Paraguay, Ecuador and Panama to Oslo, and three of them had meetings with both Norway’s royal couple and prime minister. The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, however, didn’t have time for either.
They’d all been invited to Oslo by Venezuelan political activist Maria Machado, who won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for her ongoing efforts to restore democracy in Venezuela. As government leaders, they were also invited for talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and a joint meeting with Norway’s King Harald V, Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon.
Milei of Argentina didn’t show up at either, with no explanation. Argentina’s embassy in Oslo, which reportedly was unaware of its president’s visit until he showed up, couldn’t explain either why failed to meet up. Støre later told state broadcaster NRK, though, that Milei had to fly right back to Argentina for the opening of Parliament.
