Bodø/Glimt victory ‘defied nature’

Norway’s small but spunky Bodø/Glimt football club logged what one commentator called a victory that all but “defied nature” on their home turf in Bodø. The club beat the mighty Manchester City and its Norwegian superstar Erling Braut Haaland.

“It was fully deserved that Bodø won,” Haaland told TV2 after the match in the Arctic city that also had treated fans and players to some spectacular displays of the Northern Lights. “I don’t know what we could have done differently. They play fantastic football.”

Bodø/Glimt got off to a great start, scoring their first two goals witin the first half-hour of play, and then another before Manchester City scored its only goal. The 3-1 result was Bodø/Glimt’s first victory in the UEFA Champions League for which the team qualified last year.

“It almost defied nature, what Bodø/Glimt delivered here,” said state broadcaster NRK’s commentator Carl-Erik Torp. “They normally play in the Norwegian league, it’s off-season, they haven’t played since December 11 … this will stand in gold letters in Norwegian football history.”
