Lottery pays out new record

A senior citizen from a small town north of Bergen looks set to have a very merry holiday season this year, after winning the largest single pot ever from the state lottery known as Lotto.

The woman in her 70s, whose identity wasn’t revealed, won NOK 34.5 million (nearly USD 6 million) over the weekend. Only one player had the right combination of seven numbers, so she wins the entire pot.

“This is the largest Lotto gain we’ve paid out ever,” Magne Vikøren of Lotto told web site bt.no. The old record was NOK 25 million.

“The winner said she was sitting and knitting when we called,” Vikøren said. “She thought I was a telephone solicitor, so I had to convince her that I really was calling from (Lotto administrator) Norsk Tipping.”

Vikøren said the woman had no idea what she’d do with so much money, “but expected that at least some of it would drip down to her children and grandchildren.” She also said she might celebrate “with a small glass of red wine.”
