Snow snarls western Norway

Winter arrived early in Bergen and elsewhere in western Norway, with snow snarling traffic and making transport hazardous for vehicles still equipped with summer tires. Some highways closed and police called for motorists to stay home.

The E39 highway was closed between Helleland and Moi, leading to long lines of vehicles stranded along the road connecting Kristiansand and Stavanger. Slippery conditions resulted in several cars skidding off the road, while there were several accidents at Jørpeland and near Egersund.

The snow also closed several mountain highways for the season and “chaotic” conditions were reported in Sogn og Fjordane. Snow also had caused challenges in Trondheim the day before.

Little if any snow was expected around Oslo, but the weather turned bitterly cold on Thursday with temperatures as low as minus-13C in some outlying areas and minus-5 in the city. The sun shone through most of the day, but clouds rolled in during the afternoon.
