Norway has halted all budget support for the African nation of Malawi, after the country’s president fired her entire government last week following revelations of massive corruption.
Norway has long been worried about corruption in the country that it’s supported with NOK 250 million (USD 42 million) over the years, reported news bureau NTB. It’s been shaken by earlier scandals involving bribery and financial irregularities. In one case, reported NTB on Saturday, authorities found the equivalent of around NOK 750,000 in cash at the home of a public sector worker who only earned a fraction of that.
Norway’s foreign ministry announced that it was freezing aid disbursements to Malawi with immediate effect.
