Sarah Gillett, a career diplomat in the British foreign service, has been appointed as the new British Ambassador to Norway. She’ll replace Jane Owen, who, according to the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office, will be “transferring to another diplomatic service appointment.”
Gillett, who has worked for the British foreign office since 1976, has been serving most recently as the British Ambasssador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. She took up her post in Bern in 2009 and before that was director of protocol in the foreign office in London.
Her career has included postings in Washington, Paris, Los Angeles, Brasilia and Montreal as well as assignments in London. She was Deputy Head of Mission in Brasilia and Consul General in Montreal prior to her ambassador posting to Switzerland.
Gillett is due to arrive in Oslo in July. In a statement released by the British foreign office, she called Norway “a great neighbour and partner of the United Kingdom.” She said she felt “very privileged to have the opportunity to serve such an important relationship.”
“Our shared interests are extensive, and I look forward to ensuring that they continue to be well looked after,” Gillett said.
