UPDATED: Two sisters originally from Chechnya, aged six and eight, were abducted from a bus on their way home from school in Kongsvinger on Tuesday afternoon. Hedmark police said the girls were taken into a silver SUV after getting off the bus.
The girls were abducted near Austmarka, about 12 kilometres from central Kongsvinger and 30 kilometres from the Swedish border reported newspaper Aftenposten. Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reported the two were snatched by masked men after getting off the bus. Police said via Twitter that the car could either have headed for Sweden or further into Norway.
“We can confirm that two sisters aged six and eight were abducted,” Hedmark police operation leader Bård Einar Hoft told TV2. “We do not know the registration number and the model of the car.”
“The circumstances around the abduction itself are unclear, but the girls were on a school bus when it happened,” Hoft said. “We have now alerted authorities nationally and internationally.”
Police appealed for any witnesses who may have seen the car.
