Police investigate more reports of russ rapes

The annual party season for graduating high school students, called russ, is off to a bad start, with police reporting on Friday that another young woman was allegedly raped during a major outdoor party at Tryvann in Oslo. Police in Tønsberg, southwest of Oslo, were also investigating a reported rape at a russ event Thursday night.

The night before the May 1st Labour Day holiday is traditionally one of the biggest party nights of the year. Russ organizations all over the country mounted large outdoor events, where the graduating students park their festive buses and gather for a long night of drinking and dancing.

State broadcaster NRK reported that the young rape victim at Tryvann was taken to Oslo’s emergency clinic (Legevakt) and police were securing evidence at the site. No arrests had been made by Friday morning.

In Tønsberg, police were holding an 18-year-old male russ, charged with raping his fellow russ, aged 19. The rapes follow assaults reported last weekend as well, while the russ were also being warned about an outbreak of meningitis. Many russ fall ill during the frenetic three-week long party season, with NRK also reporting high use of antibiotics amongst them.
