Norway’s internationally popular electronic pop duo Röyksopp has made the new opening theme music for Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK)’s national nightly newscast Dagsrevyen. It will make its nationwide debut “soon,” reported NRK over the weekend.
Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland have been working on the new 12-second jingle (called a vignett in Norwegian) for nearly a year, to give the newscast a new “sound profile.” They’ve had to intersperse the work, though, amidst international touring and a host of other projects.
NRK’s Dagsrevyen gathers between 600,000 and a million Norwegians in front of their televisions every evening at 7pm, and plays a major role in setting the national agenda regarding current events and issues. No other news program or media outlet comes close to having the impact of the nightly newscast on what’s often referred to as Norway’s version of the BBC.
Both Berge and Brundtland claimed they felt “honoured” to get the job from NRK, which also included new “sound profiles” for other NRK news shows including district newscasts, NRK’s debate show Debatten and its foreign affairs program Urix. NRK officials, meanwhile, said Röyksopp was NRK’s first choice when it started working on new “design profiles” for the state broadcaster’s news division NRK Nyheter. They were pleased Röyksopp took the job.
“We were able to choose composers from the top shelf,” said NRK project leader Aksel Helgheim, calling Röyksopp’s music “very durable, you can listen to it again and again.”
