Norway’s unemployment rate had stopped rising earlier this year and seemed to have stabilized, but new figures from state statistics bureau SSB show that it moved upwards again in June.
SSB reported this week that around 135,000 Norwegians remained out of work in June, amounting to 4.8 percent of the workforce. Economists who’ve been claiming that Norway’s economic downturn was bottoming out were surprised, since they’d expected the unemployment rate to remain steady at 4.7 percent.
One economist at DNB Markets, however, told newspaper Dagens Næringsliv (DN) on Thursday that the jobless numbers are “quite volatile” and few expected any new major rise in unemployement.
