Kirkenes man admits killing wife and stepson

A 59-year-old Norwegian man in Kirkenes has admitted to shooting both his wife and her son last month in a double murder that shook the small Arctic city in Northern Norway. Police planned a new round of questioning this week.

The man, who also shot himself but survived, killed his 37-year-old wife from Thailand, Pimsiri Songngam, and her son Petchngam. The 59-year-old was allegedly distraught because she planned to move out of their home and file for divorce.

The defendant, still recovering from his self-inflicted gunshot wound, remains in isolation in police custody at the University Hospital in Tromsø. His defense attorney, Stein Rønning, told state broadcaster NRK that he has admitted killing the two. It remained unclear whether he’d be convicted of negligent homicide or pre-meditated murder.

Police have continued both their investigation of the murder scene and questioned around 50 people who knew the family. The dead woman’s family in Thailand was reportedly following the case through the Thai consulate.
