US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel set off protests during the weekend, also in Oslo. Protesters waved Palestinian flags as they assembled in front of the Norwegian Parliament.
They were preaching to the choir, in a sense, because many Norwegian politicians including MPs and members of the government already had protested Trump’s decision themselves. Norway has spent years trying to help broker peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians and Trump’s decision was not viewed as constructive.
On the contrary, it angered many including demonstrators in Oslo. Both the US and Israeli embassies in Oslo remain targets, and the US embassy sent out a warning to US citizens in Norway as well, to be extra vigilant and security conscious, especially in large gatherings of people.
