Warnings up for more heavy rain

Oslo just broke another record for warm weather, posting 101 “summer days” so far this year with temperatures of at least 20C (nearly 70F). The fair weather is about to change, though.

Norway’s state meteorological institute has posted warnings for heavy rain on both Friday and Saturday, with the wet weather expected to extend into Sunday as well. “We have sent out a warning at the yellow level,” meteorologist Geir Ottar Fagerlid, told weather site yr.no. That means caution is advised because of flood danger.

A low pressure system in the North Sea is due to unleash heavy rain all over Østlandet, which is the area of southern Norway east of the mountains. Predictions were calling for between 15 and 25 millimeters of rain per hour.

“We don’t know for certain where this will fall, but the area east of the mountains is the most vulnerable,” Fagerlid said. Residents were urged to keep an eye on their cellars and remove any valuable items in advance. The weather was also expected to produce lightning and thunder.
