Fatal stabbing in Oslo

A fatal stabbing in Oslo’s Majorstua district set off a massive police response at midday on Monday. Armed police officers were searching for someone who fatally stabbed another person near the Majorstua elementary school.

Details remained sketchy but a police spokeswoman stressed that the school was not directly affected by the stabbing. Police haven’t released the gender of either the victim or the assailant.

Operations leader Hanne Nordve told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) there was no reason to view the assailant as a threat to others. She called on the public to report any observations of suspicious persons or anyone with blood on their clothing.

“We received a report of a stabbing at 12:15pm,” Nordve told NRK. “When police and health care personnel arrived at the scene we found a person who was declared dead by health care officials shortly thereafter.” The victim’s identity was quickly established but no details were released pending notification of next of kin.
