Bad weather cancels some fireworks

Stormy weather that slammed into Norway’s northwest coast on Monday forced several cities to cancel their traditional fireworks displays on New Year’s Eve. Winds were so strong that it was dangerous send up rockets.

“We have to think ‘safety first,'” Eigunn Stav Sætre, culture chief for the City of Kristiansund, told state broadcaster NRK late Monday afternoon. Kristiansund was among the cities being hit hardest by the rough weather that was moved in along the coast all the way from the southeast to the northwest.

Norway’s state meteorologic sent out warnings that the weather could be dangerous, urging folks to stay indoors. Officials in Ålesund also called off their fireworks displays, as did the town of Ulsteinvik.

Residents of Trondheim, however, were treated to their city’s traditional lighting of torches at the Kristiansten fortress. Officials also planned to carry out their fireworks display at midnight.
